Now we’re not giving you an excuse to lose thirty minutes on Facebook looking at what your friends are doing , but a study by Harvard University has shown that posting on social media releases Dopamine, a chemical that helps regulate the pleasure centers of our brain. So it turns out that apart from helping you relieve stress by focusing on other things, this common and mundane activity actually has scientifically proven benefits. It also provides you with a way to quickly detach from whatever’s aggravating you without making it too difficult to reinsert yourself.
Grab a (Healthy) Snack
A common response to stress is binge eating. It’s easy as well enjoyable, but while this might work for some, this does present the problem of unwanted and unnecessary weight gain– bringing us to a healthier option: fruits. Fruits are not only good for you, they also help release endorphins which make you happier. Fruits such as bananas, grapes, and berries are good examples of fruits that contribute to the production of those endorphins.
Have a Quick Chat
An activity as simple as having a laugh with a colleague can do wonders in bringing down your stress levels. Venting out frustrations about homework and lessons and teachers always helped when you were back in school, didn’t it? This can be applied to the work environment too — just talking about what stresses you out with someone who understands what you’re going through can help you let go of those negative feelings and move on.
Stress will always be a part of our work lives but that doesn’t mean we have to roll over and take a beating every time it comes around. All that separates you from having a good day or a bad one could be doing something as quick and easy as doing one of these things. So the next time you find yourself facing a stressful situation, push back from your desk and take a breather — peruse your social media feeds, grab an apple or simply ask how your coworker’s day is going.
